Hand Stripping

For some breeds hand-stripping is required to keep their coat in optimum condition. Benefits of hand stripping are it keeps the coat looking shiny, vibrant in colour and has a natural protection from dirt and moisture.

Ideally dogs should be stripped every 4 to 12 weeks depending on their coat and the result you are looking for.

Things to consider if you want your dog hand-stripped

  • If a dog has been neutered it will likely produce more undercoat therefore the coat becomes softer and harder to strip particularly if left for too long periods between stripping so regular visits and brushing at home is essential.
  • If the coat does eventually become too stubborn to strip you will be advised to have them clipped rather than cause them discomfort as their welfare is always put first.
  • Puppies should be hand-stripped as early as possible, ideally from 12 weeks old to encourage the hair to come away more easily even if there is not much growth on the coat. Please note leaving it 6 months and over has the opposite effect.
  • Older dogs are more likely to suffer discomfort from hand-stripping as changes in hormones soften the coat over time. It’s advisable in these cases to consider clipping as this is much quicker and more comfortable for them.
  • If your dog has been clipped already it cannot go back to being hand stripped as the structure of the hair would already have changed.

Having attended many seminars & workshops for hand stripping run by some of the UK's leading Dog Groomers, Nicki has gained a wealth of knowledge and experience in hand-stripping and consequently has become very popular for this service in the area.
